With regard to the hepatobiliary system (liver and gallbladder), medicinal plants exert three main types of actions: choleretic, cholagogue and liver cell protection.
Choleretic plants help to increase the amount of bile secreted in the liver. Bile is stored in the gallbladder, until the passage of food causes it to empty into the intestine. Helping to increase bile production, plants with choleretic properties decongest the liver and promote digestion. This type of plants is especially used in liver disorders.
Cholagogue plants facilitate the emptying of bile contained in the gallbladder into the duodenum, facilitating the correct functioning of the biliary system. In the presence of gallstones, special care should be taken when using plants with cholagogue properties, as there may be a risk of obstruction of the common bile duct.
